The historic city of Évora is an ideal base for the beautiful Alentejo countryside halfway between Lisbon and the Spanish border. A beautiful region, sparsely populated and dotted with cork oaks, olive trees and (pre) historic monuments. Here and there furnished with villages and towns as white spots in the sunny landscape. Especially in the low season it's great to cycle here on mostly quiet roads where sometimes the only shade comes from a flying stork. As World Heritage Evora itself has much to offer.
