Daily choises for a longer or shorter tour
Day 1 Arrival in Tomar
On the shores of the Nabão river next to an urban park lies your accommodation. This historical city is a perfect place to get acquainted with this beautiful country strolling through the old town.
Day 2 Tomar – Fátima, 50 km
This route goes along the aqueduct of the Templar Castle of Tomar. From there you will meet authentic agricultural villages leading you to Fátima, the self-declared altar of the world.
Day 3 Fátima – Nazaré, 55 km
After having visited the sanctuary of the Marian apparition, the next leg brings stunning views from the National Park of Serras de Aire and Candeeiros before visiting the sumptuous Alcobaça Monastery, to finish the day over the estuary of the Alcobaça river.
Day 4 Nazaré – Óbidos, 45 km
Along the shore the tour heads south along the coast with beautiful views over the sea on one side and the national park on the other side. Half way lies the peaceful bay of São Martinho do Porto, start of the scenic cycle track.
Day 5 Restday or round trip, 50 km
The mid holiday rest is situated in the enchanting citadel of Óbidos, in former days reigned by the Romans, Visigoths, Moors and the Portuguese kings successively. A beautiful place to wander and give the cycle muscles a rest. Or you pay a visit to the Peniche peninsula with its impressive cliffs withstanding the battering sea waves or its castle.
Day 6 Óbidos – Torres Vedras, 50 km
Today you will visit the fruit centre of Portugal. The vineyards, apple, pear and other orchards will accompany you along the way to reach the next stop, yet another authentic medieval city, Torres Vedras.
Day 7 Torres Vedras – Sintra, 50 km
The way to Sintra leads along the extraordinary Mafra National Palace and the green National Park of Sintra and Cascais. Due to the climate the Lisbon upper society used to have their summer homes in this region escaping the heat of the capital.
Day 8 Sintra – Lisbon, 55 km
Along the Atlantic coast this stage will bring you to the Portuguese capital. Although we will enter the big city the latter part will be done over cycle tracks. Along the way are several important monuments, like the Belem Tower and the monument for the explorers in the Age of Discovery. After arrival it’s time to explore the city of Lisbon, like Rome, built on seven hills. Enjoy the the rich history, bring a visit to the castle with a marvellous view over the city, traditional Down Town, one of the museums or just a stroll through the Edward VII park.
